In the tablet wars, thin is in.

That's what Google brings to the table with its upgraded Nexus 7, which ships to stores Tuesday.

\n

The second-gen Nexus is noticeably slimmer and sleeker, which can be a practical feature when you're on the go and don't feel like lugging around another device.

\n

Google is touting its 7-inch display with its 7.8 by 4.5-inch dimensions as something you can throw into a small purse or your pocket - although the latter isn't exactly a comfortable fit.

\n

It is easier to handle than the iPad mini, though, which has a 7.9-inch screen that makes it slightly larger and heavier.

\n

While the original Nexus 7 had a more stylish, leather-like backing, the new model feels rubberized. It keeps the device from slipping in your hands, but it loses the alluring look of the iPad mini with its glass and aluminum shell.

\n

The main way the Nexus 7 outshines its older version - and the competition - is through its display.

\n

Videos play in 1080p HD, making for the most vibrant and crisp display of any tablet currently out there, including the iPad.

\n

The battery can also last up to nine hours playing video - an hour more than the first Nexus 7 - and has a wireless charging capability.

The device, which now comes with rear- and front-facing cameras, runs on the latest Android 4.3 Jelly Bean operating system and comes preloaded with all of Google's top apps, including Maps, which lets you see actual street views just like on a computer, and Google Now, a real-time, voice-command personal assistant similar to Apple's Siri.

\n

But what makes the device stand out is its cost. The new Nexus 7 runs from $229 to $349, while the iPad mini runs from $329 to $659, depending on storage.

\n

While it looks thin, the Nexus still packs a punch among tablets of its size.
